Rights and Privacy

We respect the rights and privacy of everyone receiving care at Diabeter. This commitment helps us deliver the highest quality diabetes care.

Important rights

ur healthcare professionals aim to collaborate closely with you in managing type 1 diabetes.

Treatment decisions should align with your needs—or those of your child—with diabetes. We’re happy to explain your rights as a patient receiving care at Diabeter.

Full Disclosure

In the Netherlands, healthcare providers are legally required to provide complete and transparent information about any medical examination or treatment. This ensures that patients can make informed decisions about their care.

If you feel the information you’ve received is insufficient or unclear, don’t hesitate to ask your care provider for further explanation.

Young people aged 16 or 17:

Young people aged 16 or 17 have the right to make their own decisions about medical examinations and treatments. They also have the right to access their own medical records. Diabeter is not allowed to share information with parents by default. This includes details about medical procedures and treatments, as well as emails, appointments, and newsletters.

However, anyone aged 16 or 17 can give Diabeter permission to share information with their parents. A consent form is available at the Diabeter reception desk. This permission can be changed at any time and remains valid until the person turns 18. After that, Diabeter no longer shares information with parents.

Children aged 11 and under:

Parents make decisions regarding medical examinations and treatments for their child. They also have the right to access their child’s medical records.
Children themselves do not have the legal right to view their medical records.

Children aged 12 to 15:

Parents and children make joint decisions about medical examinations and treatments. Consent is required from both parties.

Children in this age group have the right to access their own medical records. However, parents need the child’s permission to view those records.

Providing Consent

Under Dutch law, individuals aged 16 and older are responsible for making their own decisions regarding medical examinations and treatments. This means you decide whether to give consent when a doctor proposes a procedure or treatment.

From the age of 16, you also have the right to access your medical records at Diabeter. Additional rules apply to children and younger adolescents.

Scientific Research at Diabeter

Diabeter conducts scientific research into the causes, treatment, and potential cure of type 1 diabetes. All research is held to strict standards to ensure safety, ethics, and quality.

Before any study begins, it is reviewed and approved by a medical ethics committee. If you are invited to participate in research through Diabeter, written consent is always required.

Privacy at Diabeter

Diabeter maintains a medical record for everyone receiving care at one of our diabetes centers. This is essential for providing appropriate treatment and is also required by Dutch law.

We take privacy seriously and ensure that all personal data remains confidential and that medical records are securely protected.

Proof of Secure Information Handling

Diabeter is certified under NEN 7510, the Dutch standard for secure information management in healthcare. This certification confirms that we meet strict requirements for protecting personal and medical data and preventing security breaches.

Holding the NEN 7510 certificate means Diabeter complies with rigorous standards for the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. We actively manage risks, control access to sensitive data, and have clear protocols in place for addressing any issues.
