The health insurance and type 1 diabetes

Insured care
Care for type 1 diabetes is reimbursed through the basic health insurance. The multidisciplinary diabetes care provided by Diabeter is also included. All you need is a referral from a general practitioner or another medical specialist. Diabeter operates in the same way as a hospital in this regard.
GoOD TO KNOW:

Different health insurers
You choose your own health insurer. It’s wise to review the advantages and disadvantages of each insurer.

This allows us to support everyone with type 1 diabetes—both children and adults.

Deductible in Healthcare
Everyone in the Netherlands pays a monthly premium for health insurance. In addition, you pay a deductible—this is the amount you cover yourself for the first healthcare costs each year. In 2024, this amount was €385.
The health insurer will send you a bill for this. The deductible does not apply to children under 18 years of age.
Invoices Sent Directly to the Insurer
Thanks to our agreements with health insurers, we bill the costs associated with diabetes care directly to them. This means you won’t receive an invoice at home. However, your health insurer can show you which healthcare costs have been reimbursed.
In special cases, individuals may receive an invoice from Diabeter—for example, if someone does not have health insurance due to religious reasons. The prices for diabetes care at Diabeter are listed hier.
Contracts for Diabetes Care in 2024
Since Diabeter was founded, we have had contracts with every health insurer in the Netherlands each year. This also applies to medical devices supplied by the Diabstore. Sometimes, at the beginning of a new year, we are still in discussions with a few insurers. Even then, we always reach agreements.
Are you receiving care at Diabeter? Then you usually won’t notice any of this.
Long-Term Agreements with Two Health Insurers
- Zilveren Kruis – Diabeter has made agreements with this health insurer for a period of 10 years.
- CZ – Diabeter had a multi-year contract with this insurer and is currently in discussions to extend it.
These health insurers recognize the benefits of specialized diabetes care offered at Diabeter’s various diabetes centers. That’s why we work closely with them to improve diabetes care and prevent future complications.
Different health insurers
Each insurer determines the monthly premium amount for health insurance individually. They also decide which supplementary insurance packages they offer.
That’s why it’s important to pay close attention when choosing a health insurance provider. It’s smart to review the pros and cons of different insurers so you can compare them effectively.
The Dutch Patients Federation (Patiëntenfederatie Nederland) explains what to consider when selecting a health insurance plan. You can read more about the different types of health insurance on their website.
The Diabetes Association (Diabetesvereniging) provides helpful information for choosing a health insurer. They also explain what steps to take if you want to switch from one insurer to another. Visit their website to learn more about changing your health insurance.
No-show fee
Diabetes care at Diabeter is reimbursed through the basic health insurance. This does not apply if you miss an appointment.
If you need to cancel an appointment at Diabeter, you must do so at least 24 hours in advance. If you don’t, we will charge a fee of €45. This is called the “no-show fee” or “missed appointment fee.” The insurer does not reimburse this.
You must pay the no-show fee yourself.
Why Does Diabeter Charge a No-Show Fee?
Sometimes, a person does not show up for their appointment at Diabeter. This is unfortunate, as time was reserved for that appointment and is then lost. Our specialists could have used that time to help other people with type 1 diabetes.
That’s why we charge a portion of the cost as a fee. This policy aligns with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
Reschedule an Appointment on Time
Diabeter understands that sometimes an appointment may not be convenient. In that case, you can reschedule it. Please do so at least 24 hours in advance. Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays do not count toward this notice period. If you reschedule your appointment on time, you won’t be charged a no-show fee.
Rescheduling is easy—just call Diabeter’s reception at 088 280 72 77.
The reception is available Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. You can also email your own diabetes care team.
Pausing health insurance
Health insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands. However, it may sometimes be necessary to temporarily suspend your insurance—for example, if you are abroad for an extended period. This can have consequences, so be cautious when pausing your health insurance.
In the Netherlands, healthcare usage is reviewed every four months. The insurer you are registered with on the first day of such a period is the one that counts.
If you temporarily stop your health insurance and later receive care from Diabeter, we cannot send the invoice to a health insurer. In that case, you will need to pay the costs for diabetes care at Diabeter yourself.
Avoiding High Costs
Always consult your diabetes care team at Diabeter if you plan to pause your health insurance. They can help with advice.
If we know until when you are insured, we can ensure that diabetes care stops before the four-month review period ends. This helps prevent unexpected bills later on.
Take the first step toward better diabetes care.
